“How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world that has such people in’t! (V, i, 184-186)
Miranda hadn’t seen many people in her lifetime and when she does, she exaggerates their presence and romanticizes the situation. When the first group of people come to her sight, she says “How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world that has such people in’t!” (V, i, 184-186), and this represents her love for humans and their presence. This reflects on one of the morals of the play, which is how life-depending situations bring out the true human nature in everyone. She seems to be very caring and empathetic, whereas this quote also represents this. She does not reject the others at first as others would do, she accepts them because they are in the same place as she is. Mirandas heart is pure as others are not because some would have planned to hurt the others for power or rejected them for their own safety, or hurt them in fear. I believe that this quote really brings out one of the morals of the play about true human nature because Miranda represents the pureness of human nature while contrasting the others at the same time. Humans will act according to the pressure of society, but Miranda fights it and brings out her kind heart. Shakespeare includes her kind heart to show all sides of humanity, not just the brutal side that is very capable of betrayal. “We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” (IV, i, 156-158)
I’ th’ commonwealth I would by contraries Execute all things. For no kind of traffic Would I admit; no name of magistrate; Letters should not be known; riches, poverty, And use of service, none; contract, succession, Bourn, bound of land, tilth, vineyard, none; No use of metal, corn, or wine, or oil; No occupation; all men idle, all; And women too, but innocent and pure; No sovereignty. (II, i, 140-49)
“You taught me language, and my profit on’t is, I know how to curse.” (I, ii, 365-366)
When Caliban says “You taught me language, and my profit on’t is, I know how to curse.” (I, ii, 365-366), he is speaking to Prospero. He says this because he is so frustrated that prospero will not treat him well as he used to and this is because Caliban raped Prospero's daughter, Miranda. When he says that all he can do is curse, he means that those were the only words that he used around Prospero and Miranda because they had treated him so badly. Caliban is asking for pity as well when he says this because he wants Prospero and Miranda to realize that his is in pain and he is calling for help. Yet he cannot hold back his anger because he has been treated so poorly.I think that Caliban deserves poor treatment because of what he has done. It was wrong of him to rape Miranda and her father Prospero has every right to treat him poorly. It seems as if Caliban sees Prospero as a father figure to her because he gave Caliban an education and kept him alive and it seems like Caliban wants that back. It is life that Caliban wants and do anything to get, he will even be a slave again just to live and survive. He just wants to be happy and kept in good condition and he is willing to do anything to get that and he is trying to guilt trip Prospero and Miranda to receive that. “I would not wish any companion in the world but you; Nor can imagination form a shape, besides yourself, to like of.”(III, i, 54-57)
Miranda is taken by Ferdinand when she first sees him because he is the only other man she has ever seen besides her father. She then falls in love within five minutes of knowing him and says “I would not wish any companion in the world but you; Nor can imagination form a shape, besides yourself, to like of.”(III, i, 54-57), which means that she sees herself with no one else but him. She thinks she is in love with him, but it is only because she is so fascinated by him. Miranda might have said this out of excitement or out of the fear of losing the only man that she could possibly be in love with. When Miranda says that she cannot imagine anyone else that she could be in love with is because she has not even seen another man besides her father. I believe that this love will not last forever because Miranda will eventually either run into another man or get off of the island. It seems as if they only are acting like they are in crazy love is because they want someone to be with when they are lonely, also Ferdinand is taken by her beauty. Overall, this Act was based on Miranda and Ferdinand's love for each other or the drunken men who were acting very strange. What message might Victor be missing when he dreams that his kiss turns Elizabeth into a corpse?
In Chapter 5, Victor creates a creature that comes to life, but he becomes terrified of his creation. He was unable to sleep that night, but when he does, he begins to have nightmares. In the dream of his, he kisses Elizabeth while he watches her turn into his mother's corpse. I believe that the message that Victor is missing is the his dream of Elizabeth turning into a corpse may symbolize her near death. Before Elizabeth turns into a corpse, he says that her lips became “livid with the hue of death” (59), and this foreshadows her near death by connecting the word “death” with Elizabeth. He also says that he see’s a “shroud envelope her form, and I saw grave worms crawling in the folds of the flannel”, and this immediately emphasizes the concept of death by telling that he see’s a cloth used for dead bodies around her. He not only see’s her turn into his dead mother, but see’s her wrapped in a cloth used to wrap dead bodies with. Victor is missing this message because of how he is so caught up with the romance in his dream about Elizabeth. I have also noticed that he tends to romanticize everything and this plays a large role on his perspective on situations like this one. The kiss may also foreshadow romance between Victor and Elizabeth where they might eventually begin a romantic relationship with each in the future, but be interrupted by Elizabeth's death. The message that Victor missed that Elizabeth’s death is near is incredibly important because it shows his blindness to negative situation because how he romanticizes everything. If Victor had noticed the symbolism of death, Elizabeth may have been saved and they may have been able to pursue a romantic relationship without the interruption of death that would cause more harm to Victor’s mental state. An experience I have had when I had to become responsible for something, is being responding for my dying dog, Katie (February 9, 2001 - September 7, 2016) I had to take care of her because my mom had gotten home really late at night because she works an hour away and sometimes had late meetings. My dog was a lab dalmation mix and was fifteen at the time when she began to suffer a spine disease that caused her body to slowly become paralyzed from her legs to her head. She could hardly walk or get up, and sometimes I couldn’t help her because I did, she’d snap. This is all because she was scared, she didn’t know what was happening to her and began to snap at my mom and I. She began to wear a diaper a month before she passed because she could no longer control anything from her stomach, down. This meant I had change it for her and when she did want to go outside, I had to strap her in a body harness because she was heavy for me to walk her downstairs. She refused her medicine a lot so I had to sit with her until she ate it, and feed her at the same time with a spoon. Taking care of Katie was a lot of work because I was scared to death that she was going to die when she was with me.
Taking care of Katie was heartbreaking, we felt like she wasn’t ready to go, until she began to suffer. I went through very many terrible emotions when she was alive because to watch her slowly become worse was heart-rending. My mom and I didn’t want to put her down if she wasn’t ready, but at the same time, we didn’t want to have suffer. I delt with this event terribly. I would cry continuous times because she was my first dog. It wasn’t easy coming to school thinking that she might be dead when I get home, so I broke down numerous times. I knew that a dog can sense when you were upset, so when i was around her, I remained calm because I wanted her to pass knowing that everything will be okay. I did everything I can for her to be happy, I showered her with love constantly until she growled at me because she was annoyed. Every time I took Katie outside, she would fall over. I tried my best to not let this happen, but when she did I became more scared of losing her life. These events continued on while I took care of her until the day after my birthday. I had just gotten home to see her lying next to walk covered in blood. This happened because she fell over and tried for so long long to get up that her paws began to bleed. This when I knew that she was suffering. I felt horrible because this happened the one time I wasn’t watching her. She was alone and scared. So we took her to the vet to be put down. I told my mom that I wanted to hold her for while before she went, so she sat on my lap for an hour while the vet was preparing for her. When she went in, I tried so incredibly hard not to cry, but I did. Seeing Her face lie almost unconscious tore me apart. All I wanted to do was take care of her and have her live a long and happy life. For a while, I felt like I was responsible for death because I wasn’t there when the tragic event happened to her. I then learned that she would of passed whether I was with her or not and I just had to let go. |
